In late 2012, after a long search and pretty much by coincidence, we heard that Highbridge House in Wappenham near Silverstone might become available for purchase. The owner was an eighty year-old widow, mad about ponies and horses, but now finding it difficult to manage in a house and grounds that were too large for her.

We were discreetly invited to view the property and were immediately charmed by it. Nothing had been done to the house in over 50 years, with no central heating installed and windows that were struggling to keep the wind at bay. The grounds were completely overgrown with vegetation and there were a collection of sheds, chicken coops and even an old railway carriage dotted around the garden.

After proving our equestrian credentials to the owner, our offer was accepted and in July 2013 we were able to start on an extensive renovation and extension programme for the house. Given that we were going to have to install a completely new central heating system, we decided to "go green", our choice being a water-source heatpump system to provide both central heating and hot water. Phase one of building programme was completed in January 2014 and the family (one daughter and two sons) moved in.

While living in the original part of the building, we then started works on a rear extension to provide a large kitchen, breakfast room and a sitting room downstairs and a double bedroom with ensuite bathroom upstairs.

All building works were concluded in January 2015 and since then we have been able to enjoy our new home.

Evenings and weekends are now taken up by gardening. It has all been a lot of work but also very exciting and enormous fun and we now have a home that we love. Come and see!

Highbridge House as we first saw it

This is what Highbridge House in Wappenham near Silverstone looked like when we first looked at it. Unfortunately the wisteria had to go as it was causing damp problems.
